 About The Subterraneans
The Subterraneans formed in October 2005 with the meeting of John Gardner (vocals / guitar), Clive Wade (Bass) and Terry McClintock (percussion /backing vocals / guitar). The three members soon found common ground in a mixture of styles including acoustic, blues, rock, funk and world, seeking particular influence from the likes of Ben Harper, John Butler Trio, Xavier Rudd and Jack Johnson. With a mixture of covers and original material written by John, the band took to the venues of Plymouth and Exeter. Highlights for the trio included; support slots for Mick Hart and Carus and The True Believers. In preparation for the bands first recording they enlisted the drumming talents of Ed, completing four tracks in May 2006 at Deep Blue studios in Plymouth. Ed was soon to leave for foreign lands but the drum kit was now an essential part of their growing sound and it was through this recording session that they discovered John Eschbaecher, not only the man who engineered the E.P but a drummer and guitarist to complement. John’s style of playing fitted in exactly with the sound. The four piece continued to spread the Subterranean sound across the country and highlights included main stage performance at the Maker Sunshine Festival, headline performance at the Great Hall in Dartington, second place finalists at the Gardening club battle of the bands in Covent Garden, London and support for Angus and Julia Stone. Spring 2007 brought along a new three track demo recorded at Iguana studios in Brixton, London and mixed / mastered back at Deep Blue, Plymouth. With this came the decision to start performing more regularly beyond their doorstep starting with a packed summer on the north coast of cornwall and aiming to hit Bristol and London come the autumn.
